I am a mother, wife, leader and coach. I grew up on a farm in rural Missouri where everybody looked the same. Many men made it clear they believed women had their place and it was not outside of the home. I recall one interaction when I was about ten years old where a male business owner gave my brother a baseball cap and failed to offer me one. When I asked if I could have one too, he laughed at me and made some everlasting comments that ignite me frequently. I knew there was a bigger world that included people who looked different than me and had other perspectives.

Because of some curveballs life threw my way, I ended up on my own at the age of eighteen. I’ve always been one to show my independence and prove I was able to deal with challenges on my own. I was a non-traditional college student, working multiple jobs to make ends meet. For the longest time, searching for my purpose. Along the way, through my curious nature and desire to learn about other cultures I was intentional in developing relationships with people of different backgrounds and from all over the world. This is much easier to do now that I live in St. Louis, Missouri.

For many years I was younger than those reporting to me and felt like I had to work extra hard to gain their respect. On top of that, I spent many years working in a male-dominated industry where I was not only the youngest but also the only female at the table. I quickly learned the power of being authentic, curious, and at the same time confident and courageous.

I continued to find myself putting other people’s needs in front of my own. Over time and a lot of self-reflection and journaling, I learned the importance of making time to focus on me. Just like our phones need to be recharged to keep working, we need to be recharged to be at our best for not only ourselves but those around us. This is why self care is so important to me and an integral part of why I coach others on the subject.

My life experiences led me to coaching others through similar experiences.
